FIRST CROCUS

it’s neither easy
nor fair
to be the first one

to work so hard to
push aside pebble, soil, snow
to suddenly poke through

and find oneself
awash in light in
an unfamiliar chill

but spring is happening
and whatever else that may mean
you are here now
and you are beautiful
